In a bid to steer the Eastern African region towards a more prosperous future, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) convened in Nairobi from August 13th to 15th, 2025. This significant gathering marked a key moment in the review and formulation of their strategic plans for the periods of 2021–2025 and 2026–2030.

A Gathering of Minds

The event, teeming with representatives from diverse sectors—government, civil society, academia, and development partners—underlined IGAD’s emphasis on participatory governance. Such wide representation signifies not just interest but a collective commitment to steering the region’s developmental ship together.

Dr. Awira’s Call for Bold Leadership

Dr. Anthony Awira, IGAD’s Director of Planning, Coordination, and Partnerships, delivered an impassioned appeal for member states to partake actively in shaping IGAD’s strategic agenda. He applauded Kenya’s proactive involvement, inspiring other nations to engage in dialogue driven by inclusivity and expertise.

In his address, Dr. Awira emphasized the necessity of aligning IGAD’s initiatives with member states’ goals to maximize value. “When we align fully with the priorities of our member states, value addition is realized and fulfilled,” he stated, reinforcing his vision.

Laying the Foundation for Future Strategies

Dr. Fatuma Adan, IGAD Head of Mission to Kenya, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the comprehensive discussions on imperative issues like peace, climate resilience, economic integration, and institutional capacity. The aim is not just to draft a responsive strategy for 2026-2030 but to fortify IGAD’s framework to drive transformative action in the region.

Reflecting on Past Progress

The insights gathered during this consultation will also underscore IGAD’s ability to enhance cooperation in conflict resolution, climate adaptation, and economic integration—hallmarks of the previous strategy’s achievements. As Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, IGAD Executive Secretary, has illustrated, these endeavors have fostered peace in troubled arenas like South Sudan and Somalia.

Shaping a Prosperous Tomorrow

Kenya’s role as a leading model in regional cooperation sets a precedent for other IGAD nations. Their commitment, as heralded by Dr. Awira, is a clarion call for participation in crafting a shared future, poised for development and stability.

According to Africa Science News, this consultation not only charts the strategic path but solidifies IGAD’s position as a catalyst in regional transformation. The road ahead is paved by bold decisions, cooperative spirit, and mutual respect among member states—a future shaped collaboratively.
